The existing Town of Bassendean Community Centre had been receiving on-going maintenance for an extended period; this was keeping the old building going for the multitude of community groups using the main hall & secondary rooms, but the tiring external aesthetic, recurring problems with a leaking roof and sub-standard amenities finally prompted Council to look at some changes.
With a limited budget, Council contacted Design2Solution to investigate alterations and additions that would rectify the main outstanding issue’s, as well as improvements for a New Kitchen and, for the New external Amenities to conform with AS1428 Access / Disabled requirements – including baby-change facilities and updated Parking.
At the core and as a starting point. a new Skillion Roof, with North and South facing Hi-lite windows allows more natural light into the Main Hall. The existing structural steel frame from the old roof was retained along with the flat metal tray ceiling. By adding a new smooth plasterboard perimeter ceiling with feature downlights, sanding & polishing the timber floor and, new wall-mount lights, the internal space was refreshed. And with newly installed ducted Air-Conditioning within the extended roof-space, year-round comfort for all Users is ensured. A defined Entry Porch using a Skillion Roof replaces the old tile & brick Porch and, in conjunction with external feature & security lighting combined, a contemporary Facade and Eaves lining, the Old was brought together with the New for an overall cohesive Elevation.
The improvements allow the Community Centre to move forward with the local population and, provide a focal point once again within the area.
